Moonlight Vessel · Hand-Carved Hetian Jade Incense Box | Openwork Jade Sachet | Song-Style | One-of-a-kind

This exquisite piece is a hand-carved openwork jade incense box (玉香囊) made from a single block of Xinjiang Qiemo blue Hetian jade — meticulously hollowed and carved by hand.

The lid opens to reveal a perforated interior, allowing it to be used as:

  • a jade incense sachet (for incense chips or beads),
  • a mini incense burner for gentle smouldering,
  • or a scholar’s object / hand piece to admire, hold, and contemplate.

The jade has a soft, creamy celadon tone with subtle translucency, elegant and restrained, echoing the refined aesthetic prized by Chinese literati.

The accompanying cord features vintage cloud-pattern jade beads, cloud-grain agarwood, yellow jade (huangfei) and clear jadeite beads, finished with a rosewood handle and flowing tassel, making it suitable both for display and for holding in the hand.

Cultural Background

Since ancient times, scholars and literati held incense in the highest regard.

In the Song Dynasty, the refined arts of life were known as the “Four Elegances” (四雅):

  • Burning incense
  • Brewing tea
  • Appreciating paintings
  • Arranging flowers

Among them, incense was considered the foremost, engaging both the senses of scent and sight. As a result, incense vessels were crafted not only for function, but as objects of beauty and spiritual cultivation.

A finely made jade incense box such as this elevates the ritual itself — transforming incense burning into a moment of stillness, elegance, and inner harmony.
